Books Worth Spending Time With
Hello ,
“Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?”
― Sir Terry Pratchett, Going Postal
Good old Sir Terry. It seems like yesterday when I met him, and though it must’ve been quite a few years ago, he certainly lives on in my memory.
Autumn is well and truly upon us, and it was Remembrance Day on Sunday, so my thoughts went to those we’ve lost, especially those who died in conflict. We were in Plymouth on the Saturday before the Remembrance event, so we visited the memorial on Plymouth Ho.
It was both sad and uplifting, and very thought provoking. To share the moment, I took some photos and there are a couple below, plus several more in our official community.
But first, here are some words of thanks:
Cheers!
A huge thank you to these wonderful regular supporters who have been sending me a monthly mug of tea for a while, using ko-fi:
Alonza and Lara.
Thank you very much.
Want to join them?
On my new store there’s an option to offer a mug of tea, or more if you’re feeling generous, and unlike ko-fi, the platform doesn’t take a cut, so I’ll be using that from now on. There’s no recurring option just yet, but I might offer that if people are interested.
TL:DR

Featured VIP Reader
Today we’re saying Hello to Darlene.
- Where you’re from: Providence, Rhode Island USA
- Favourite book: Pride and Prejudice
- Favourite authors: Austen, Christie
- Last book you read: Circus of Wonders
- Fun fact: At 74 years old, I've started taking dance lessons, ballroom - with an emphasis on East Coast Swing, and line dancing, R&B and Country.
Thanks Darlene. It was lovely to hear about your dance classes - they sound great. I’ve been talking about doing some dance classes for years, so this is a good reminder for me to get on with it. Pride and Prejudice is a wonderful book, but I didn’t realise how hilarious it was until I saw it adapted as a play - the audience were in stitches, and I found a new appreciation for Austen.
Who will be the next Featured VIP?
If you’d like it to be you, all you have to do is to fill in this form:.
Featured Photos
On Plymouth Ho, preparations were underway for a Remembrance Sunday event the following day, and the ceramic (I think) poppies formed a crimson sea in front of the main memorial.
The statues are rather grand, and it’s humbling and moving to walk there. I even managed to find a couple of Camplings listed among the many names.
The rest of the photos are in our community, AND there’s also a photo of a gorgeous Labrador puppy. Not ours, but a new canine friend for our oldest son and his partner. Worth joining just for the puppy!
There’s also a poll in the members’ area: a chance to let me know where you get your ebooks. This is to help me to serve your needs.
You'll need to sign in or register to see the poll and the photos, but membership is free and always will be:
Book News
From the 17 November, A Study in Stone will be featured as a First in Series Free book on Kobo, and that lasts for a week.
I’m glad I launched the 2nd edition of this book, but it meant that the title lost all its many glowing reviews, and I could really use your help with this.
If you enjoyed the book, I’ll be very grateful if you could post a review on your favourite retailer, and if you use Goodreads, that would be great too. Thank you.
Valley of Lies is still one of the Kindle Monthly Deals in the UK, so if you, or someone you know, would like to save some pennies, here’s a handy link:
The above link is an affiliate link. You pay the same amount, but I may receive a small commission from Amazon if you buy from their store - every little helps.
What's Next?
I’m still, yes still writing the next Devonshire Crime Thriller, and the criminal almost got caught this morning as my fingers flew over the keys. So close, DC Spiller, but you’re not quite ready to slip the handcuffs on the perpetrator yet.
In other news, if you’ve looked at our community, you’ll see that I’ve been putting some time and effort into it, and it’s getting there. It’s all free and you can see everything, post comments and even send messages.
When I post on the community, members are notified by email, so my plan is to post an update there every week but reduce the number of newsletters I send out. That way, you can stay in control and hear from me as often, or as rarely, as you like.
Right, I’m going to dig out a Terry Pratchett book. These long evenings are perfect for sitting by the fire with a book that makes you chuckle.
Until next time, happy reading and take care.
