Books Worth Spending Time With
Hello ,
‘It is not everyone,' said Elinor, 'who has your passion for dead leaves.’
― Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility
I saw this quote and appreciated the timely reminder of Austen’s dry wit: one character responding to another’s excited observations on the beauty of falling leaves. Although I admire Austen’s work, I’m not an aficionado, so I’ll leave that as it stands before I get myself into trouble.
Personally, I love to see the leaves swirling in the breeze like autumnal confetti, and I usually try to catch an oak leaf before it reaches the ground, but I’ve missed most of them this year and the branches are pretty much bare.
Still, I snapped a few autumn landscape photos recently and there are a couple below and more in our online community.
If nothing else snags your interest in the newsletter, I hope you enjoy the photos, so let’s get to them. But first, a word or two of thanks:
Cheers!
A huge thank you to the eager readers who’ve bought ebooks from my store recently. Thank you very much.

Featured VIP Reader
Today we’re saying Hello to Jamie
- Where you’re from: Dullatur, Scotland
- Favourite book: Terry Pratchett, "Guards Guards" & Noel Langley "The Land of Green Ginger"
- Favourite authors: Georgette Heyer & Miss Reid
- Last book you read: Septimus and the Danedyke Mystery by Stephen Cance
- Fun fact: My brother owns the most remote hotel in mainland UK.
Thanks Jamie. Interesting choice of books, and I like the sound of that hotel. It sounds like an ideal writing retreat (shades of The Shining notwithstanding).
Who will be the next Featured VIP?
If you’d like it to be you, all you have to do is to fill in this form:
Featured Photos
Vintage Agatha Christie book covers at the museum in Torquay, the town where Christie was born. I was there to watch some local crime writers talk on a variety of panels. All very interesting and some useful info. There’s some more info in our online community.
A view over the Teign Valley, captured before the leaves fell. As always, more photos in our community.
A Prize and a Poll
There’s also a poll in the members’ area: a chance to let me know where you get your ebooks. The poll only stays open for 7 days.
Each time I send a newsletter, I’ll pick one random member of our online community to win a signed copy of my most recent ebook, A Shamefaced Murder. I hope that’ll be a fun thing to own even if you already have a standard copy.
Signed ebooks are a new feature on BookFunnel, and the ebook will be digitally signed individually by me. I’m hoping to offer signed ebooks for sale later on.
You'll need to sign in or register to see the poll and the photos and be in with a chance to win, but membership is free and always will be:
Book News
My first crime thriller, Lawful Duty, is part of a promotion on Kobo in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, so I matched the price on my store.
Valley of Lies is still one of the Kindle Monthly Deals in the UK but only for a few more days, so if you, or someone you know, would like to save some pennies, here’s a handy link:
The above Amazon link is an affiliate link, so you pay the same amount, but I may receive a small commission from Amazon if you buy from their store - every little helps.
Merch!
I know, I’m not some big-shot author with legions of fans clamouring for merchandise, but I can create custom merch on my store, and I thought you might find it fun.
Enter The Devonshire Mysteries T-Shirt
In a fetching shade of blue, it features one of my original photos and the caption, I’d rather be reading a Devonshire Mystery. There’s a range of sizes, all on a cotton T-shirt made by Gildan and printed on-demand.
I ordered a sample and it’s a nice shirt. Perfect to keep you warm as you curl up with a good book.
What's Next?
I’ve reached the point where I don’t want to jinx my upcoming crime thriller by saying it’s almost done (for what feels like the twentieth time). DC Spiller finally made a vital realisation today, so he’s getting ready to grab a killer, but one of his colleagues put herself in danger, so Spiller and I will have to sort that out.
In other news, I’ve added more features to my store. I added the Darkeningstone ebooks to it recently, and there are gift cards too, in a range of values, so they could be a useful gift for a friend who might like my books.
Moves are also afoot to relaunch my Brent Bolster Sci-Fi comedies, and my other Sci-Fi books too, so they should be appearing early in the new year.
But now, much as I’d like to run outside and go kicking through the dry leaves piling up in the Devon lanes and byways, I find I’ve missed the last of the daylight, so any leaf-based antics would be ill advised.
I’m sure Austen’s Elinor would approve.
Until next time, happy reading and take care.
